The data presented below corresponds to emissions in 2006.(See also: carbon cycle) On 6 October 2009, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a new data set for 2007 emissions that listed about 140 countries. The contents of this article comes from the latest figures from the millennium indicators as of 2009-07-14: . The top 10 countries in the world emits 67.2% of the world total.
The data itself were collected in 2007 by the CDIAC for United Nations. These are indicated in italics and are not counted in the ordering of sovereign states.
The data consider only carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, but not emissions from deforestation, and fossil fuel exporters, etc. This is a list of sovereign states by carbon dioxide emissions due to human activity.
